Introducing Nick Bell

We’ve been chatting to Nick Bell, one of our screen and digital printers, to learn about working on the printing floor and discover how the industry has changed over the years. Read on to find out more.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and when you joined BDH Tullford?

I’ve been working at BDH Tullford for more than 40 years!

I left school at 16 and began doing a summer job printing cosmetic bottles. However, there wasn’t really enough work for me to do. My employer then very kindly found me a job with BDH Tullford – I think he felt a little sorry for me as I’d left school a bit early to help him out. I’ve been here ever since, barring a year or two. 

What are the key aspects of your role and how have these changed over time?

Every day is very different as we print onto a huge variety of materials. I pitch in and do a little bit of everything, from screen printing and digital printing to print finishes. I fill in for other people whenever I’m needed, too. 

I started off working solely on screen printing, but we’ve gradually moved to more digital work as the demand for it has increased. Now I mostly work on digital printing, preparing the materials, cutting it, that sort of thing. 

What are your favourite parts of the role?

Everything is equally interesting but I have to say that I prefer screen printing. I like setting it all up and ensuring the accuracy of it. I also always have a good time when I come to work – I like a bit of banter with the team so it’s never a chore to come in every day.

What are the main challenges of your job?

Sometimes it can be fast-paced, but it’s important that we always take the time to do it right. If there’s a challenge, we help each other out. Nine times out of 10, if someone can’t do a task, someone else can. We always work together and new things usually just need a bit of thought.

What do you get up to outside of work?

All sorts of things! I like going to the pub with friends, walking, reading and watching interesting (or silly!) videos on YouTube. I also sometimes have a go at cooking, although I stick to simple things such as spag bol.
