What does FSDU stand for?

FSDU stands for ‘Freestanding Display Unit’. The phrase refers to units and shelves that stand alone on the shop floor, which are typically used to draw attention to products or offers.

 They can be manufactured from a range of materials into a variety of shapes and sizes. Cardboard display stands are most common.

What is a custom FSDU?

A custom FSDU is a freestanding display unit created specifically for your business and its needs. 

It will be designed with your branding and retail environments in mind to ensure it achieves maximum impact.

What are the benefits of using a free-standing display unit?

To get your very own freestanding display unit, you’ll need to supply us with a brief that details the products or samples you intend to display. You can also supply your own artwork, but if you need a little help in this area, our on-site design team can lend a hand and draw up something that will catch customers’ eyes. 

Once the artwork has been settled, we’ll work out your FSDU’s footprint and weight requirements. This will be fed into the design, which can be made to fit within any specified supermarket guidelines. 

If you wish, we can then create a prototype. This is ideal if you want to be sure about the fit. Once you’re happy, we’ll go ahead with your FSDU production and distribution. If not, you can send along your amendments and we will alter the design for you.

What are the weight tolerances of an FSDU?

This can vary depending on the freestanding unit. Whereas the body of an FSDU is pretty standard, the shelf construction can be changed to cope with different weights. In some cases, they can be made to tolerate weights of 20kg or more.

What are the benefits of using a free-standing display unit?

There is a number of reasons you should consider using an FSDU:

• Attention-grabbing: Freestanding displays are sure to stand out on the shop floor.
• Temporary: As freestanding units, they can be removed at any time.
• Easy to assemble: Most FSDUs are flat-packed and lightweight, so they can be constructed quickly and easily.
• Cost-effective: Because they’re temporary, floor standing display units are often cheaper than permanent shelving and units. Cardboard display stands are often even cheaper because of the material they’re made from.

What Are The Challenges Of Designing A Freestanding Display Unit?

The biggest challenge is creating an FSDU that fits within the strict guidelines of major retailers. Floor space is costly and at a premium in any shop, so size really does matter when it comes to footprint and the height of an FSDU. 

The hardest part of the design process is therefore creating a unit that still fits the size of your product. Sometimes filler fittings have to be used, which can then increase the price of the unit.

What About Countertop Display Units (CTDUs)?

A countertop is a prime location from a sales point of view because it puts your product right in front of the customer in places such as the sales desk. However, a CTDU is also much more limited in terms of space. The design and footprint is therefore very important, as is the height, because it should not obscure the vision of your staff.
